چکیده

Let H be a hypergraph and let Lv : v ∈ V (H) be sets; we refer to these sets as lists and their elements as colors. A list coloring of H is an assignment of a color from Lv to each v ∈ V (H) in such a way that every edge of H contains a pair of vertices of different colors. The hypergraph H is k-list-colorable if it has a list coloring from any collection of lists of size k. The list chromatic number of H is the minimum k such that H is k-list-colorable. In this paper we prove that every d-regular three-uniform linear hypergraph has list chromatic number at least ( log d 5 log log d) 1/2 provided d is large enough. On the other hand there exist d-regular three-uniform linear hypergraphs with list chromatic number at most log3 d + 3. This leaves the question open as to the existence of such hypergraphs with list chromatic number o(log d) as d → ∞.

Adapted List Coloring of Graphs and Hypergraphs

We introduce and study adapted list coloring of graphs and hypergraphs. This is a generalization of ordinary list coloring and adapted coloring, and has more applications than these. We prove that the upper bounds on the adaptable choosability of graphs and uniform hypergraphs in terms of maximum degree are sufficiently stronger than those on the ordinary choosability, while the bounds in terms...

Exact Algorithms for List-Coloring of Intersecting Hypergraphs

We show that list-coloring for any intersecting hypergraph of m edges on n vertices, and lists drawn from a set of size at most k, can be checked in quasi-polynomial time (mn)o(k log(mn)). 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.1 Combinatorial algorithms, G.2.2 Hypergraphs

A Paintability Version of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and List Colorings of k-partite k-uniform Hypergraphs

We study the list coloring number of k-uniform k-partite hypergraphs. Answering a question of Ramamurthi and West, we present a new upper bound which generalizes Alon and Tarsi’s bound for bipartite graphs, the case k = 2. Our results hold even for paintability (on-line list colorability). To prove this additional strengthening, we provide a new subject-specific version of the Combinatorial Nul...

Coloring uniform hypergraphs with few edges

A hypergraph is b-simple if no two distinct edges share more than b vertices. Let m(r, t, g) denote the minimum number of edges in an r-uniform non-t-colorable hypergraph of girth at least g. Erdős and Lovász proved that m(r, t, 3) ≥ t 2(r−2) 16r(r − 1)2 and m(r, t, g) ≤ 4 · 20g−1r3g−5t(g−1)(r+1). A result of Szabó improves the lower bound by a factor of r2− for sufficiently large r. We improve...

Hypergraph list coloring and Euclidean Ramsey theory

Abstract: It is well known that one can color the plane by 7 colors with no monochromatic configuration consisting of the two endpoints of a unit segment. In sharp contrast we show that for any finite set of points K in the plane, and for any finite integer s, one can assign a list of s distinct colors to each point of the plane, so that any coloring of the plane that colors each point by a col...
